5 Steps to Rejuvenating Your Health and Fitness Goals

As women, we are wonderful at giving our energy to others while putting our lives and health on the back burner. Whether it’s a change in family situation, job, or simply having more or less time on your hands, it’s important to take stock of your general health and happiness, which are two things I firmly believe go hand in hand. Today I will break down how to recapture your health and happiness into five steps.

I’m not going to say the steps are simple or even easy, but they are extremely important for your well being.  How do I know all of this? I’ve lived it over and over. I experienced challenges with having adequate time for my goals in my career while managing a triathlon store, and having three babies in five years makes reevaluation constantly evolving. One thing is for sure if I am not exercising in one form or another my brain and body are not happy. My biggest turning point in regaining my personal health and happiness was towards the tail end of 2014. I didn’t even realize how unhappy I had become. A few friends and I decided to let a woman who was training to be a life coach have a practice session with us. It’s a night I will never forget. All of my friends sat around a living room and were assigned the task of finding one area of our lives we weren’t experiencing joy. Mine was easy, I missed triathlon. I had taken a hiatus from the sport after recently having my second daughter. I had plenty of logical reasons I couldn’t participate anymore. I realized two things. First, I didn’t know how to participate anymore at a non-competitive level. My body had some definite lasting scars, and I didn’t recognize it anymore. My training friends didn’t take a three year hiatus and gain and loose baby weight. I didn’t know how to get started again and here’s the important part: I was standing in my own way! For all these reasons I didn’t know how to get started again. Interestingly enough, in the next few months, my friend, Kelly, and I made Tri it for Life Charleston a reality and the following year I founded She Tris.  I thought there had to be more women just like me, ones who needed a place to start and I had to help them.

Your happiness is important. Let’s figure out what that means for you.

Step #1 - Listen to your inner voice

Listen to your needs, your desires, to what your heart is telling you.  Is there something missing from your life? What is it? If you are out of balance, if you feel something isn’t right, if you know you are not giving yourself enough, if you know you want to lead a healthy life but don’t know why you haven’t started or can’t stick to it, this is your heart telling you you’re not going down the path it honestly wants.
So what do you do, how do you answer these feelings and questions? You start.  Listen, then act.

Step #2 - Find your purpose, set your goal
What is it that energizes you?  Is there something you once were passion about but now is missing because of work, kids, life, volunteering? Write down what you want for yourself.  Whatever it is, write it down. Set a date. If it’s an event, register for it.

Step #3 - Determine your journey
Write down the steps it will take. Who in your life can help you get there? Maybe you have a buddy who shares a similar goal who will help hold you accountable. How will you restructure your day to make sure your purpose is being met? Involve your family. This can be a work in progress. You may think of things to add as you get started.  Life happens. Be prepared to make adjustments.  Prepare yourself in a way that works for you. Whether it’s getting your husband on board to help with the kids, creatively figuring out how/when to get in some training (crack of dawn, in the evening), whatever might work for you. It’s also a work in progress, please realize that and make adjustments.  For me, I need a training buddy. I will never cancel on meeting that person, but I will think of a hundred reasons why I need to give the dog a bath instead of go for a run on my own.

Step #4 - Tell everyone
We live in a society that overshares. Now it’s your turn! Share your goal and your journey with your friends and family. You might be amazed with the support you receive.

Step #5 - Celebrate the achievements
No matter how big or small, celebrate the achievements along the way! Never stop finding ways to keep your journey as a top priority. I like to reward myself with new fitness clothing when I reach a milestone I set for myself.

Remember your purpose, why you are doing this and what it is in turn doing for you- recapturing your health and happiness. I’d love for you to share what works for you maybe it will help someone else, you never know!

Angi

HI! I’ll be upfront and honest and say I am not a professional blogger. In fact, I am guilty of not even reading blogs. So why am I now blogging? Someone told me I should and thought I had something to share.  One thing I am sure of is if I can help people, primarily women, get motivated and do something for themselves that makes them happy, feel good, and be healthy, then I am all in.  I should start off by introducing myself and give you some background on who I am and why is my blog worth reading. I am a wife, mom of three girls under five, an athlete, a philanthropist, and an entrepreneur.  I’ve been participating and working in the endurance sports business since 2005. I am a sports enthusiast and played every sport I could while growing up in a small rural town called Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. I’ve had my own rewarding and challenging experiences with endurance sports, but it wasn’t until I tried the sport of triathlon that I really felt like I had a balanced workout. I quickly became hooked and I wanted to share this experience with others.

My background is in Recreation and Leisure Services Management. Post college graduation, I spent 10 years as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist working with adults and children with disabilities. I changed careers in 2008, and stayed in the health and fitness industry. I was a senior store manager at TrySports and simultaneously managed two locations of a triathlon store, one in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and one in Charlotte, North Carolina. I discovered how rewarding it was to work with beginners and what a difference it made to help someone get the right start. Through TrySports I met the founder of a non-profit called Tri it for Life (TIFL).  TIFL inspires women of all ages, sizes, backgrounds and abilities to develop healthy lifestyles through multisport training, membership and commitment. TIFL is an all-volunteer run, non-profit organization that uses mentorship to prepare women to participate in their first women’s only triathlon. Tri It For Life mentors spend 12 weeks helping athletes discover a new title—Triathlete! Tri It For Life not only helps women train for their first women’s only triathlon, they encourage women to put themselves first. Since 2008, more than 1,800 women athletes supported by over 800 mentors have crossed the finished line. Tri It for Life helps women start the journey to become triathletes by saying, “You can do it!” I knew I wanted to bring a chapter of TIFL to Mt. Pleasant I just didn’t know when.  In 2011, I took a break from triathlon to have my first two children. I couldn’t stay fully away from triathlon so I worked with a girl of high school age who was blind to learn the sport of triathlon. We participated on a tandem team. It was amazing.

I missed triathlon so much that in 2014 I invited a group of my friends (all new to triathlon) to train for a race together.  Most of the group thought I was crazy, but I was able to convince them to try it and they had an amazing experience.  As a result, the idea developed between me and my close friend, Kelly, to start a local Charleston Chapter of Tri It For Life (TIFL).  The time was finally here. TIFL Charleston was about to be born. The closest women’s only triathlon was in North Carolina. I realized that there was a void in the community so I decided to produce an all-women triathlon, which is where the idea for the event called She Tris developed. It is my goal to continue to inspire women to put themselves first and create their own journey to becoming a triathlete.

She Tris is Charleston’s only all-women triathlon and welcomes women of all ages, sizes, ability levels and backgrounds. Daughters, mothers, sisters, aunts, and grandmothers can all participate together.  Our tag line is- All Women, 3 Sports. One Journey. The Second Annual She Tris will take place at I’On Club and surrounding neighborhoods on June 10, 2017. The event is a triathlon consisting of a 200 yard swim, 9 mile bike and 2 mile run. It’s a scenic course that takes in glimpses of the beautiful Low-country lifestyle. A pool swim makes this event truly beginner friendly.  It’s spectator friendly as well, which makes for an enjoyable experience for families.

She Tris believes in encouraging women to have a healthy lifestyle and to create their own journey to participate in the sport of triathlon. Tri it For Life is our natural fit for a charitable partner and proceeds from the event will benefit the non-profit. However and wherever the journey starts, She Tris is an event any woman can accomplish. If she believes she can, she will!
It is my hope with this blog, and with the help of guest bloggers, you will get an insight of why triathlon is worth your time and money (the gear is half the fun), struggles and laughs along the way, and how to start your very own journey.
